On this day in 1895, Paul Muni was born. Muni's acting career began in the Yiddish theater; as a teenager, he displayed a gift for makeup that allowed him to play much older characters. He would become one of the most respected film actors of the 1930s, so highly thought of that Warner Bros. allowed him to choose his own roles, a very unusual privilege at the time. From the mid 1940s on, Muni chose to work primarily in the theater, and made only a few more movies before retiring in 1962. Muni stars in the 1932 version of Scarface (which would be remade in 1983 with Al Pacino); it's available for streaming at Hoopla. |

And on this day in 1946, King Sunny Ade was born. Ade is a singer-songwriter whose music is rooted in a Nigerian style called jùjú, which is marked by the use of the talking drum as the lead instrument. Ade has added non-African instruments to traditional jùjú, and the combination made him a pioneer of the world music movement. Several of Ade's albums are available for streaming at Hoopla. |
