In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

William Golding: Lord of the Flies On this day in 1911, William Golding was born. Golding was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1983. His best known work is his first novel, Lord of the Flies, an allegory in which a group of schoolboys descend into savagery when stranded on an isolated island. "Lord of the Flies" is a literal translation of "Beelzebub," the name of a demon from the Bible. Golding's Lord of the Flies is available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, in print, or as an audiobook.
Committed On this day in 1913, Frances Farmer was born. Farmer was a moderately successful actress of the late 1930s, but is perhaps better known for the sad drama of her personal life. Reports of erratic behavior and alcoholism had already begun to appear when Farmer was arrested on a traffic violation in 1942; that began a series of events that ultimately lead to her institutionalization in 1944. Farmer would spend most of the next six years in a Seattle hospital. She attempted an acting comeback after her release, but would make only one more film. Farmer's story is told in the documentary Committed, available for streaming at Hoopla.
Brook Benton: Mother Nature, Father Time And on this day in 1931, Brook Benton was born. Benton was already a successful songwriter when he made his breakthrough as a performer in 1959 with "It's Just a Matter of Time." He was a regular presence on the pop and R&B charts in the early 1960s; he resurfaced in 1970s with his last major hit, "Rainy Night in Georgia." A variety of Benton's music is available for streaming or download at Freegal.
