On this day in 1659, Henry Purcell was born. Purcell began composing music very early; at least one piece survives that was written when he was eleven. He was a master of the Baroque period, writing choral music, songs, several operas, and a large amount of incidental music for theatrical productions. Much of Purcell's theater music can be heard in a collection conducted by Christopher Hogwood (who was also born on this day, in 1941); it's available for streaming at Hoopla. |

On this day in 1908, Raymond Scott was born. He was the leader of the Raymond Scott Quintette (actually a six-piece ensemble) in the late 1930s. Scott's compositions were hectic and busy-sounding, with relatively little improvisation. Many of them became familiar not in their original versions, but as adapted by Carl Stalling in the soundtracks to Looney Tunes cartoons of the 1940s. A collection of recordings by the Raymond Scott Quintette is available for streaming or download at Freegal. |

And on this day in 1945, Jose Feliciano was born. The singer-songwriter is also a virtuoso guitarist, whose music mixes styles from flamenco to jazz to easy-listening. His 1970 song "Feliz Navidad" has become a Christmas standard throughout the Americas. Feliciano has had great success recording in both English and Spanish, and you'll find 2 different "greatest hits" collections, one for each language, available for streaming or download at Freegal.
