On this day in 1835, Camille Saint-Saëns was born. The composer was a child prodigy, making his debut as a pianist at the age of ten, playing concertos by Mozart and Beethoven. Saint-Saëns' music remained relatively conservative throughout his life, but is noteworthy for his melodic gifts and skillful orchestration. On this day in 1919, the Cincinnati Reds won the World Series, 5 games to 3, over the Chicago White Sox; the Series was marred by the "Black Sox" scandal. Eight members of the White Sox were accused of being paid by gamblers to throw the Series. And on this day in 1920, Yusef Lateef was born. His primary instruments were the tenor saxophone and flute, but he also played oboe and bassoon, and incorporated lesser-known instruments from other cultures -- the shofar, the koto, the shanai, and others -- into jazz. Lateef recorded more than 60 albums in a recording career that lasted for 50 years; several of his albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal. |
