In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

Buster Keaton silent shorts On this day in 1895, Buster Keaton was born. Keaton was one of the great stars of silent film comedy, a gifted physical comedian who performed his own stunts; his trademark deadpan earned him the nickname "The Great Stone Face." His feature films from the 1920s -- Sherlock, Jr., The General, and Our Hospitality among them -- are considered among the finest silent films ever made. Keaton's short films from the same era are collected in three volumes, available for streaming at Hoopla.
Soylent Green On this day in 1923, Charlton Heston was born. The actor worked frequently in live television during the 1950s, and became an iconic movie star playing Moses in the 1956 DeMille movie The Ten Commandments. In the 1950s and 1960s, he frequently starred in historical epics -- Ben-Hur, El Cid, The Agony and the Ecstasy. The 1970s brought success in a series of science-fiction adventures such as the original Planet of the Apes movies and The Omega Man. The 1973 sci-fi classic Soylent Green is available for streaming at OverDrive, or on DVD.
Sweet Honey in the Rock: Live at Carnegie Hall And on this day in 1942, Bernice Johnson Reagon was born. She was a leader in the 1960s civil rights movement, and a founding member of the Freedom Singers. In 1973, she founded Sweet Honey in the Rock, an a cappella ensemble of African-American women who perform traditional and new music rooted in Gospel and spirituals, with a strong focus on social activism and justice. Sweet Honey in the Rock's Live at Carnegie Hall is available for streaming at Hoopla.
