Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

Jeff Guinn: The Last Gunfight On this day in 1881, the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral took place in Tombstone, Arizona. The faceoff pitted Marshal Wyatt Earp and his deputies against a group of five outlaws; Earp and the outlaws had been feuding for some time. Thirty shots were fired in about thirty seconds, and three of the outlaws were killed. Jeff Guinn's The Last Gunfight tells the story of the events leading up to the battle, and of its aftermath. It's available as an e-audio from Hoopla, and in print.
Mahalia Jackson: Gospels, Spirituals, & Hymns On this day in 1911, Mahalia Jackson was born. Jackson became known as "The Queen of Gospel," and was a dominant presence in gospel music for more than 20 years. She was the first gospel singer to perform at Carnegie Hall, and she sang at the 1963 March on Washington, just before Martin Luther King, Jr. made his famous "I Have a Dream Speech." Several of Jackson's albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Milton Nascimento And on this day in 1942, Milton Nascimento was born. The singer-guitarist came to prominence in Brazil as part of the 1960s "Clube da Esquina," an informal collective of musicians who mixed traditional bossa nova with jazz and rock styles. By the mid-1970s, Nascimento had reached international stardom, and frequently collaborated with American and European jazz musicians. A selection of Nascimento's albums is available for streaming at Hoopla.
