Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

Solti: The Legacy On this day in 1912, Georg Solti was born. Solti was one of the major orchestral and operatic conductors of the 20th century, and made more recordings than many of his colleagues. Solti recorded more than 250 albums, including 45 complete operas; his 1958-1965 recordings of the four Wagner operas in the Ring cycle are often praised as among the finest operatic recordings ever. A wide range of Solti's music is available for streaming at Hoopla.
Celia Cruz On this day in 1925, Celia Cruz was born. Cruz was a singer of salsa and other Latin music, and one of the most influential artists in her genre. She won multiple Grammy Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, and released more than 70 albums in her fifty-year career. Several of Cruz's albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Lee Frank & Rachel Anderson: Ultimate Nachos And this day is celebrated as the International Day of the Nacho. Nachos were invented in the mid-1940s by Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya, the maitre'd at a restaurant on the Mexico/Texas border. Some guests arrived after the kitchen had closed for the night, desperate for anything to eat. Anaya prepared a snack from the limited food available in the kitchen -- tortillas, cut into chips and fried, with melted cheese and pickled jalapenos. The snack caught on; today, nachos are a favorite comfort food. Lee Frank and Rachel Anderson offer more than 80 variations on the theme in Ultimate Nachos, available in print.
