Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

I Confess On this day in 1920, Montgomery Clift was born. He began appearing on Broadway at the age of 15, and spent a decade there before going to Hollywood to make movies. Within a few years, Clift was one of the biggest stars in the business, despite being notoriously picky about which movies he was willing to make. Clift was seriously injuredd in an automobile accident in 1956, and required significant plastic surgery; he never quite recovered emotionally from the experience, and one friend described the next decade as "the longest suicide in Hollywood history." Clift stars in Alfred Hitchcock's 1953 thriller I Confess, which is available for streaming at OverDrive.
Jonathan Eig: Get Capone On this day in 1931, Al Capone was convicted of income tax evasion. The Chicago gangster was responsible for dozens of murders, and repeated violations of bootlegging laws during Prohibition, but the government could never get conclusive proof to convict him on those charges; what they could convict him of was tax evasion, and he was sentenced to eleven years in federal prison. Jonathan Eig's Get Capone tells the story of the government's quest to prosecute Capone; it's available as an e-audio from Hoopla.
Karen Bush Gibson: Women in Space And on this day in 1956, Mae Jemison was born. In 1992, Jemison became the first African-American woman in space when she took part in a mission on the shuttle Endeavour; she spent almost eight days in space. After leaving NASA, she founded her own company which researches uses for advanced science in daily life. Karen Bush Gibson's Women in Space tells the stories of 23 female space pioneers; it's available as an e-book from Hoopla.
