On this day in 1920, Walter Matthau was born. In his early movie and stage career, he was often cast as the heavy; it wasn't until he appeared on Broadway in The Odd Couple (and later in the movie version) that people realized he could be funny. He and Jack Lemmon were a popular comedy team, making ten movies together. Matthau never abandoned drama, though, and his rumpled curmudgeonliness was often put to good use as a policeman or detective. The 1974 thriller The Taking of Pelham One Two Three casts Matthau as a police officer coping with a hostage crisis on the New York subway; it's available for streaming at Hoopla. |

On this day in 1935, Julie Andrews was born. Her elegant grace and precise soprano voice made her one of the world's most popular theater and movie stars in the 1960s. In the 1970s and 1980s, she frequently turned to television, in successful variety specials which paired her with (among others) Carol Burnett or the Muppets. And as Julie Edwards, she's also been a successful author of children's books. The album A Little Bit of Broadway is a collection of showtunes, some taken from Andrews' cast recordings, others from shows that she never actually appeared in; it's available for streaming or download at Freegal. |
