Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

Patti Page On this day in 1927, Patti Page was born. After several years of singing with different bands, Page went solo in the late 1940s; her first big hit was "Confess," one of the first records to feature a singer harmonizing with herself in multi-tracked vocals. Page's career lasted longer than most traditional pop singers of her era; she continued to have chart hits into the mid-1960s, and successfully moved into country music in the 1970s. Several of Page's albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Crooklyn On this day in 1952, Alfre Woodard was born. Woodard has been a fixture in film and television for thirty years, and is praised as one of the most versatile actresses of her generation, bringing to the screen a distinctive mix of warmth and gravitas. She was nominated for an Academy Award for the 1983 film Cross Creek, and has won four Emmy Awards. She stars in Spike Lee's 1994 film Crooklyn, playing the mother of a Brooklyn family in the early 1970s; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
Kazuo Ishiguro: The Remains of the Day And on this day in 1954, Kazuo Ishiguro was born. The novelist was born in Japan, but raised in England from the age of 5. Ishiguro has said that Japanese films have had a greater influence on his than Japanese fiction, of which he has read relatively little. His stories, often set in the past, frequently deal with narrators who are unable to change their circumstances, and the general tone is of melancholy acceptance of one's fate. The Remains of the Day, about the relationship between a butler and a housekeeper on a British estate in the years before World War II, is available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, or in print. The film adaptation, starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, is available on DVD.
