Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

On this day in 1887, Paul Wittgenstein was born. He was a concert pianist whose right arm was amputated after he was shot during World War I. Wittgenstein began to commission concertos and other pieces for the left hand only; Britten, Prokofiev, Ravel, Korngold, and others wrote music for him. Several of those pieces are now part of the standard repertoire and are regularly performed by two-handed pianists. Leon Fleisher, who lost the use of his right hand for several decades due to a neurological disorder, performs a recital of pieces from the left-handed repertoire; it's available for streaming or download at Freegal. |
