Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

On this day in 1797, Gaetano Donizetti was born. Donizetti was one of the most popular Italian opera composers of the 19th century, and many of his 70 operas -- Lucia di Lammermoor, L'elisir d'amore, Anna Bolena, La fille du régiment -- are still frequently performed. Several recordings of Donizetti's operas are available for streaming at Hoopla. |

On this day in 1927, Vin Scully was born. Scully has been the radio announcer for the Dodgers since 1950, when they were still the Brooklyn Dodgers. Scully has announced that the 2016 season will be his last. That will give him a 67-season career with the Dodgers, a longer relationship than any other broadcaster has had with a single team in professional sports history. Curt Smith's biography of Scully, Pull Up a Chair, is available as an e-book from Hoopla. |

And on this day in 1972, Atari announced the release of Pong. Its graphics are primitive by today's standards, but it was the first commercially successful arcade video game; arcade owners reported that their biggest technical problem was emptying the machine of quarters frequently enough to keep the mechanism from jamming. When a home version was released three years later, it was just as successful; many consider Pong to be the game that launched the video game industry. Pong is just one of the games whose stories make up the documentary Game Play, a history of the videogame revolution; it's available for streaming at Hoopla. |
