Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

The Invisible Man On this day in 1889, Claude Rains was born. He began his career in the theater, and didn't begin film acting until he was in his 40s; his first significant movie role was in The Invisible Man. He would be one of the major character actors of the 1940s, receiving four Academy Award nominations in seven years. Rains' memorable films include Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Casablanca, Notorious, and Lawrence of Arabia. The Invisible Man is available for streaming at Hoopla.
Sam Kashner & Nancy Schoenberger: Furious Love On this day in 1925, Richard Burton was born. Burton's career began in the 1950s; he was successful both on stage, where he was acknowledged as one of the finest Shakespearean actors of his era, and in film. As fine an actor as he was, he probably became even more famous for his turbulent relationship with Elizabeth Taylor, to whom he was twice married. In Furious Love, Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger tell the story of Burton and Taylor and their notoriously stormy relationship. It's available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, or in print.
Ennio Morricone: Main Titles And on this day in 1928, Ennio Morricone was born. In the last 60 years, Morricone has composed the scores to more than 500 films and television series, working in both the Italian and Hollywood film industries. His first great international success came with his scores to Italian "spaghetti Westerns" in the 1960s; the main theme from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was an international pop hit. Morricone continues to work; his latest project is the score for Quentin Tarantino's upcoming movie The Hateful Eight. Main Titles collects themes from forty of Morricone's scores; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
