Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

Jill Lepore: The Secret History of Wonder Woman On this day in 1893, William Moulton Marston was born. Marston was a psychologist and inventor who created one of the first blood pressure tests, and helped to develop the polygraph, but he is best known as the creator of Wonder Woman. He had been working on ideas for a new superhero when his wife, Elizabeth, suggested that it should be a woman. The character made her debut in December 1941, and by mid-1942, was starring in her own comic book. Jill Leport tells the story of Marston and his creation in The Secret History of Wonder Woman; it's available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive.
The Littlest Outlaw On this day in 1912, Pedro Armendáriz was born. Armendáriz began his film career in the 1930s in Mexico, where he starred in many popular films, often partnered with Dolores Del Rio. In the late 1940s, he began working in Hollywood films, most notably in John Ford's Fort Apache and 3 Godfathers. He would continue to work in both Mexican and American films (and occasionally in French and Italian cinema, as well) until his death in 1963. Armendáriz stars in the 1956 Disney film The Littlest Outlaw as a harsh Mexican general; the movie is available for streaming at Hoopla.
Giulini in America: Los Angeles Philharmonic And on this day in 1914, Carlo Maria Giulini was born. In the years after World War II, Giulini swiftly rose to become one of the world's most popular conductors. He served as Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1978 to 1984, and made several critically acclaimed recordings with the orchestra during those years. Many of those recordings are collected on Giulini in America: Los Angeles Philharmonic, available for streaming at Hoopla.
