On This Day: May 4

Keith Chaffee, Librarian, Collection Development,

Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music, e-audio, magazines, and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

Alice in Wonderland movie imageAlice Liddell, the girl who inspired Lewis Carroll to write Alice in Wonderland, was born on this day in 1852. She lived until 1934, so she might have seen the 1933 film version of the story, with an all-star cast including W. C. Fields as Humpty Dumpty, Cary Grant as the Mock Turtle, and Edna May Oliver as the Red Queen. You can stream the movie at Hoopla.
Peter Gunn album coverThe first Grammy Awards were awarded on this day in 1959. The Album of the Year winner was Henry Mancini's Music from Peter Gunn, which you can stream or download at Freegal.
Iron Lady book coverAnd on this day in 1979, Margaret Thatcher became the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Enjoy her biography, The Iron Lady, as an Axis360 e-book or in print, or watch the Meryl Streep film adaptation at Hoopla or on DVD.
