Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

On this day in 1874, G.K. Chesterton was born. He wrote on a wide range of subjects -- theology, literary criticism, history -- but is perhaps best known today for his short stories about Father Brown, a priest who solves mysteries through close reasoning, focusing on moral and philosophical aspects of the case. Several of the five volumes of Father Brown stories are available as e-books or e-audios from OverDrive, or you can tackle The Complete Father Brown in print. |

On this day in 1903, Bob Hope was born. His career began in vaudeville, and those stage skills served him well during the more than 50 USO tours he made to entertain American troops overseas. He hosted the Academy Awards fourteen times, more than any other host, and made more than seventy movies. Among them were the "Road" movies, which co-starred Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. Several of them are available for streaming at Hoopla. |

And on this day in 1956, La Toya Jackson was born. Though she has sometimes been overshadowed by her brothers, she was a successful solo artist in the 80s and 90s before her career was derailed by an abusive husband/manager; she's begun to record again in recent years after getting out from his control. Her album Imagination is available for streaming and download at Freegal. |
