In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

Ian Fleming: Doctor No On this day in 1908, Ian Fleming was born. Fleming worked as an assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence during World War II, and drew upon those experiences when he began writing spy novels in the 1950s. Those novels gave us the legendary character James Bond; Fleming would write twelve Bond novels, and other authors have added roughly thirty more books to the series since his death. Doctor No, one of the original Fleming novels, is available as an e-audio from OverDrive, or in print.
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau: Schubert Lieder On this day in 1925, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was born. Fischer-Dieskau was one of the most acclaimed classical singers of the 20th century, a dominant presence on opera and concert stages for thirty years. He had a large repertoire, and was comfortable singing in multiple languages, but was particularly praised for his performances of German art songs. A variety of Fischer-Dieskau's recordings is available for streaming at Hoopla.
Gladys Knight & the Pips: Touch And on this day in 1944, Gladys Knight was born. As the leader of Gladys Knight and the Pips, she was a popular R&B singer in the 1960s and 1970s; her hits included "Midnight Train to Georgia," "I've Got to Use My Imagination," and "If I Were Your Woman." The Pips retired in 1988, and Knight has continued to record and perform as a solo artist. Several of her albums, with and without the Pips, are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
