He adopted the stage name "Silverheels" from his nickname during his early career as a lacrosse player (he is a member of the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame). On this day in 1920, Peggy Lee was born. She started as a big band singer in the 1940s and continued to record and perform for fifty years. She adapted better than most singers of her era to the coming of rock and roll, and her later albums often included songs written by young writers like Paul McCartney or Melissa Manchester along with the standards by Irving Berlin or Henry Mancini. At Last: The Lost Radio Recordings is a collection of songs from her 1950s radio show; it's availablr for streaming or download at Freegal. |

And on this day in 1954, Alan Hollinghurst was born. His novels deal with the lives of gay men in Britain, both before and after the gay rights movement. The Stranger's Child tells the story of a (fictional) minor poet of the World War I era, and how his personal and literary reputation are altered over the years by cultural changes. It's available in print, or from OverDrive as an e-book or an e-audio. |
