Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

Margaret Wise Brown: Goodnight Moon On this day in 1910, Margaret Wise Brown was born. Between 1937 and 1952, Brown wrote more than 100 children's books. Most were picture books, and she worked with some of the best illustrators of the era -- Clement Hurd, Garth Williams, and Esphyr Slobodkina among them. Perhaps her most enduring book is the classic bedtime book Goodnight Moon, illustrated by Hurd; it's available as an e-audio from Hoopla, and in print.
Scatman Crothers: Oh Yeah! Also on this day in 1910, Scatman Crothers was born. Crothers worked as a jazz musician in the 1930s and 40s, leading his own band, and performing throughout the Midwest. He moved to Los Angeles in 1952, and quickly found work in the movies and television. In the 1970s, he became a popular voice actor, starring in the Saturday morning cartoon Hong Kong Phooey. His mid-50s performances of jazz standards are collected on Oh Yeah!, available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Artie Shaw: The Great American Songbook And also on this day in 1910, Artie Shaw was born. Shaw was a clarinetist, and the leader of one of the most popular bands of the late 1930s and early 1940s. He was an ambitious and curious musician who added elements of classical music to his band's performances, and even wrote a jazz clarinet concerto. He retired from performance in 1954, citing his own perfectionism; he would start a new Artie Shaw Orchestra in the 1980s, which continues to play, though Shaw himself led it only for a brief time. Several albums of Shaw's music are available for streaming at Hoopla.
