The Arthur Conan Doyle Megapack On this day in 1859, Arthur Conan Doyle was born. Doyle is best known as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, but he was a prolific author who wrote several plays, four volumes of war poetry, dozens of short stories, and more than 20 novels. In addition to mystery stories, Doyle wrote historical fiction, military history, horror, adventure stories, and some of the earliest science fiction. The Arthur Conan Doyle Megapack collects more than 60 of Doyle's non-Holmes stories; it's available as an e-book from OverDrive.
Go Tell It on the Mountain On this day in 1939, Paul Winfield was born. Winfeld began appearing on television in guest roles in the mid-1960s, and appeared regularly on the series Julia, one of the few TV shows of the era to feature African-American leading characters. He was an Academy Award nominee for the 1972 film Sounder, and developed a loyal following among science-fiction fans in the 1980s and 1990s, appearing in The Terminator, Mars Attacks, and the Star Trek and Babylon 5 TV shows. Winfield stars with Alfre Woodard and Ving Rhames in the 1984 adaptation of James Baldwin's Go Tell It on the Mountain; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
Karen Lord: Redemption in Indigo And on this day in 1968, Karen Lord was born. Lord is an author of science fiction and fantasy, and one of the rising stars in the genre. Her first novel, Redemption in Indigo, is a Caribbean-flavored retelling of a Senegalese folktale; it was nominated for the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 2011. Redemption in Indigo is available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive.
