On this day in 1609, Shakespeare's sonnets were first published by the publisher Thomas Thorpe. It is unclear whether this publication was authorized by Shakespeare or whether the publisher was working from an unauthorized copy. The 154 sonnets were not particularly popular at the time; their reputation has grown over time, particularly with the increased interest in the 19th century in Shakespeare's writing. The sonnets can be heard in an e-audio at Hoopla, and are also available in print. |
