In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

Liberace: 16 Biggest Hits On this day in 1919, Liberace was born. He began his career as a traditional concert pianist, but by the early 1940s, he was performing a nightclub act that mixed light classics with pop music, all of it delivered with enormous personality and flamboyant showmanship. By the mid-1950s, Liberace was making more than a million dollars a year, and he would be a fixture of Las Vegas entertainment for the next 30 years, until his death in 1987. Several of Liberace's albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Adrienne Rich: Collected Early Poems, 1950-1970 On this day in 1929, Adrienne Rich was born. Rich published her first collection of poetry in 1951, and would be one of the most acclaimed American poets of the late 20th century. As her career progressed, Rich's poems and essays increasingly dealt with her feminism, civil rights activism, and lesbianism. In 1997, she declined the National Medal of Arts as a protest against the policies of the Clinton administration. Rich's Collected Early Poems: 1950-1970 is available as an e-book from OverDrive or in print.
Debra Ann Pawlak: Bringing Up Oscar And on this day in 1929, the first Academy Awards ceremony was held at the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel. Douglas Fairbanks hosted the event, at which awards were given in twelve categories. There was no suspense for the winners, whose names had been announced three months earlier. The Awards were one of the first projects of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which had been founded just two years earlier. Debra Ann Pawlak's Bringing Up Oscar presents the early history of the Academy and its award; it's available as an e-book from OverDrive or in print.
