Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

Richard Beeman: Plain, Honest Men On this day in 1787, the Constitutional Convention officially began in Philadelphia, though it would almost two weeks before a sufficient number of delegates actually arrived to begin deliberations. Over the next four months, the 55 delegates, representing 12 colonies -- Rhode Island did not send a representative -- would create the American government system and write the Constitution. In Plain, Honest Men, Richard Beeman describes the months of debate, the contentious issues, and the various compromises that led to the Convention's approval of a Constitution; it's available as an e-book or e-audio at OverDrive, or in print.
Lou Harrison for Strings On this day in 1917, Lou Harrison was born. Harrison studied composition with both Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, and began composing in the late 1930s. His music was often inspired by Asian music, particularly by the gamelan music of Indonesia; much of it is written for percussion instruments that he constructed himself. Several of Harrison's pieces for string orchestra can be heard on Lou Harrison: For Strings, available for streaming at Hoopla.
Bobby Darin: Darin at the Copa And on this day in 1936, Bobby Darin was born. Darin's career was short -- he was only 37 when he died -- but wide-ranging. He started as a rock'n'roller ("Splish Splash," "Dream Lover"), moved on to covers of international pop standards ("Beyond the Sea," "Mack the Knife"), and eventually broadened his repertoire to include country and folk songs. Several of Darin's albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
