Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

On this day in 1845, Gabriel Faure was born. Faure wrote a great deal of chamber music, songs, and music for piano; he wrote relatively little orchestral music. His style did not change radically over his life, remaining mostly in a late-Romantic style, but he was not hostile to more modern music, and some of his later music hints at then-current trends and developments. A collection of short Faure pieces for soloist and orchestra is available for streaming at Hoopla. |

And on this day in 1928, Burt Bacharach was born. For more than thirty years, Bacharach's songs appeared frequently on the pop charts. His peak was in the 1960s, when he wrote (most frequently with lyricist Hal David) a series of hit songs for Dionne Warwick -- "Anyone Who Had a Heart," "Wallk On By," "A House Is Not a Home," "I Say a Little Prayer." More than 70 Bacharach songs have made the top 40; Bacharach leads an all-star lineup in performing many of his biggest hits in One Amazing Night, available for streaming or download at Freegal. |
