On this day in 1786, Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro was premiered in Vienna, with Mozart conducting from the fortepiano. The opera was an instant success with both the public and the critics, and it has remained a staple of the operatic repertoire, receiving particular praise for the skill and complexity of the writing at those moments when several characters are on stage together. On this day in 1923, Joseph Heller was born. Heller wrote novels, short stories, plays, and two volumes of memoir, but he is best remembered for his novel Catch-22, a satire in which soldiers attempt to make sense of the baffling military bureaucracy during World War II. The phrase "Catch-22" has entered the English language, describing a situation which you can't get out of because of contradictory rules. And on this day in 1934, Shirley Horn was born. Horn was a jazz singer and pianist, noted for her ability to sing while playing her own complex accompaniment, and for her interpretative skill, particularly in ballads. Horn occasionally worked with large bands, but generally preferred to sing with smaller ensembles, most often with her own trio.
