In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

20th-Century Classics: Villa-Lobos On this day in 1887, Heitor Villa-Lobos was born. Villa-Lobos is perhaps the most significant Latin American composer to date, writing important orchestral, chamber, vocal, and guitar works. His music combines the European classical tradition with influences of Brazilian folk and street music. His series of nine pieces called Bachianas Brasileiras are attempts to fuse Baroque counterpoint and harmonies with Brazilian music. Four of the Bachianas Brasilerias are included in the 20th-Century Classics recording devoted to Villa-Lobos, along with several other pieces; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
My Fair Lady (original Broadway cast recording) On this day in 1908, Rex Harrison was born. Harrison had a 50-year career in film and on the stage, winning two Tony Awards and an Academy Award. Harrison was adept at both comedy and drama, and while he was not much of a singer, he developed a "talking in pitch" style that audiences enjoyed enough to allow him to star in musicals, including his classic portrayal of Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady. The original cast recording of My Fair Lady is available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Pier Paolo Pasolini: St. Paul And on this day in 1922, Pier Paolo Pasolini was born. Pasolini was a poet, essayist, political activist, and film director whose confrontational political style and explicit depictions of sex and violence made him a controversial figure. Even after 40 years, the levels of sexual sadism in his final film, Salò, are such that the film is still banned in several countries. Pasolini's never-produced screenplay St. Paul explores the life of Paul and his legacy in the modern era; it's available as an e-book from OverDrive.
