Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

The Essential Haydn On this day in 1732, Franz Joseph Haydn was born. Haydn is among the major composers of the Classical period. Along with his contemporary Mozart, his music was hey to standardizing the forms of the string quartet and the symphony. During his lifetime, Haydn's music was both popular with audiences and admired by critics. A large collection of Haydn's music, The Essential Works, is available for streaming at Hoopla.
Miriam Pawel: The Crusades of Cesar Chavez On this day in 1927, Cesar Chavez was born. Chavez was a civil rights activist and labor leader. In 1962, Chavez and Dolores Huerta founded the union that would become the United Farm Workers, which worked to organize agricultural laborers, many of them migrant workers. At its peak in the late 1970s, the UFW represented more than 50,000 workers, most of them in California and Florida. Chavez' birthday is a state holiday in California Colorado and Texas. Miriam Pawel's biography, The Crusades of Cesar Chavez, is available as an e-book from OverDrive, or in print.
Herb Alpert: South of the Border And on this day in 1935, Herb Alpert was born. As the leader of the Tijuana Brass, Alpert was among the biggest musical stars of the mid-1960s; the Brass' hits included "A Taste of Honey, "Tijuana Taxi," and "Casino Royale." Alpert went on to a solo pop career in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, he records jazz albums, frequently with his wife, singer Lani Hall. Several of Alpert's albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
