Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

Gesualdo: Prince of Madrigalists On this day in 1566, Carlo Gesualdo was born. His madrigals and sacred music were far ahead of their time, using chords and harmonic progressions that sound more like the late 19th century than the 16th century. He is also noted for the drama of his personal life, included the murder of his first wife and her lover when he found them in bed together. Prince of Madrigalists collects a selection of Gesualdo's music; it's available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Peter Biskind: Star On this day in 1937, Warren Beatty was born. He is a multi-talented actor, writer, and director, and the only person to twice receive four Academy Award nominations (for acting, writing, directing, and producing) for the same film, for Heaven Can Wait and Reds. Beatty's other memorable films include Splendor in the Grass, Dick Tracy, and Bonnie and Clyde. Peter Biskind's biography of Beatty, Star, is available as an e-audio from OverDrive, or in print.
Eric Clapton: Unplugged And on this day in 1945, Eric Clapton was born. Clapton is one of the most influential rock guitarists. He is the only person to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times -- as a solo artist, as a member of the Yardbirds, and as a member of Cream. He continues to record and perform after a career of more than fifty years. Several of Clapton's albums are available for streaming at Hoopla.
