On this day in 1902, William Walton was born. The British composer worked slowly, with frequent revisions, and ocasionally suffered from writer's block, particularly in his last years. His music is relatively conservative for its era, and often marked by a bittersweet nostalgia. Walton Conducts Walton features several of his major works, among them the Viola Concerto, the First Symphony, and the cantata Belshazzar's Feast; it's available for streaming at Hoopla. |

On this day in 1918, Pearl Bailey was born. Bailey's career began in Philadelphia's black nightclubs in the 1930s; by the mid-1940s, she was popular enough to be invited to tour the country with the USO, entertaining troops stationed at US military bases. Bailey made her Broadway debut in 1946; in 1967, she would win a Tony Award for starring in an all-black production of Hello, Dolly! Several of Bailey's albums are available for streaming or download at Freegal. |

And on this day in 1960, Jo Nesbø was born. Nesbø has been among the leading figures in the recent boom in Scandinavian crime fiction. In the United States, he's best known for his novels about Oslo police inspector Harry Hole. In Norway, he's also known as the lead singer of a popular rock band, and as the author of a series of children's books about the eccentric Doctor Proctor. The Bat is the first novel in the Harry Hole series (though it was not the first to be published in the United States); it's available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, in print, in large type, or as an audiobook. |
