On this day in 1851, Vincent d'Indy was born. D'Indy was a composer who supported himself by teaching composition; in his 40-year career, his students included Isaac Albeniz, Erik Satie, Darius Milhaud, and Cole Porter. D'Indy's own music has fallen somewhat out of favor in recent decades, though his Symphony on a French Mountain Air is still occasionally performed. That piece, along with d'Indy's Second Symphony, is available for streaming at Hoopla. |

On this day in 1899, Gloria Swanson was born. In the 1910s and 1920, Swanson was among the biggest stars in silent film; she was among the nominees at the first Academy Awards ceremony. She struggled to make the transition when sound came to the movies; by the 1940s, she was working mostly in the theater. She made a comeback in 1950 with Sunset Boulevard, playing a delusional faded star of the silent film era; the success of that film revived her celebrity. While she made very few films after Sunset Boulevard, she worked steadily in theater and television, and was a popular guest on talk and variety shows for the next thirty years. Stephen Michael Shearer's biography, Gloria Swanson, is available in print; Sunset Boulevard is available on DVD. |

And on this day in 1952, Dana Stabenow was born. Stabenow has written historical novels and science fiction, but is best known for her mysteries. Her two series characters are private investigator Kate Shugak and state trooper Liam Campbell, and the distinctive landscapes and personalites of Alaska play a large part in both series. Stabenow's non-series novel Blindfold Game is more of an international thriller, though parts of the action take place along the US-Russia maritime border near Alaska; it's available as an e-book from OverDrive, or in print. |
