Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

David Von Drehle: Triangle On this day in 1911, 146 garment workers were killed in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, most of them young immigrant women in their teens and twenties. The factory was located on the eighth, ninth, and tenth floors of a Manhattan building; workers were unable to escape the fire because exit doors had been locked in order to prevent theft. As a result of the fire, the state of New York passed laws creating new factory safety standards. David Von Drehle tells the story of the fire and its aftermath in Triangle; it's available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, or in print.
Flannery O'Connor: The Complete Stories On this day in 1925, Flannery O'Connor was born. O'Connor's body of fiction was small -- two novels and 32 short stories -- but she was an important voice in Southern literature. Her writing fused elements of the Southern Gothic with her Catholic faith, and often explored questions of ethics and morality. O'Connor's short stories are collected in The Complete Stories, which is available as an e-book from OverDrive, or in print.
Aretha Franklin: Aretha Now And on this day in 1942, Aretha Franklin was born. "Respect," "Chain of Fools," "Think, " and "Freeway of Love" are just a few of the songs that have made Frankln the most successful woman in the history of the Billboard charts. The "Queen of Soul" was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and she continues to record, tour, and perform today. A large selection of Franklin's albums is available for streaming at Hoopla.
