On this day in 1909, Clyde Barrow was born. Barrow was the leader of a gang of thieves who committed dozens of robberies between 1931 and 1934. Barrow and his girlfriend, Bonnie Parker, were among America's first celebrity criminals; for some, they were romanticized as outsiders fighting back against the system. Bonnie and Clyde were killed in 1934 when they were ambushed by a posse of Texas and Louisiana police officers. Jeff Guinn's Go Down Together tells the Bonnie and Clyde story; it's available as an e-book from OverDrive, or in print. |

On this day in 1919, Lawrence Ferlinghetti was born. Ferlinghetti is a poet, painter, and publisher. It was his bookstore/publishing company, City Lights, that published Allen Ginsberg's Howl in 1956, leading to Ferlinghetti's trial on obscenity charges; he was acquitted in 1957. City Lights is best known for its publication and advocacy of the Beat poets; the bookstore was made an official historical landmark by San Francisco in 2001. The documentary Ferlinghetti: A Rebirth of Wonder looks at Ferlinghetti's life, art, and literary influence; it's available for streaming at Hoopla. |

And on this day in 1930, Steve McQueen was born. McQueen's first big break came in television, where he starred for three years in the Western Wanted: Dead or Alive. In the 1960s and early 1970s, he became a major movie star, generally playing rebellious anti-heroes. Among his memorable films are The Magnificent Seven, Bullitt, and Papillon. Marc Eliot's biography Steve McQueen offers a comprehensive look at McQueen's life and career; it's available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, or in print. |
