On this day in 1930, Stephen Sondheim was born. Sondheim is among the major Broadway composers of the 20th century; his musicals include such landmark works as Company, Follies, and Assassins, for which he wrote both words and music; he was also the lyricist for Gypsy and West Side Story. His 1979 musical Sweeney Todd is written a more operatic style, and is sometimes performed by opera companies; it's available for streaming or download at Freegal. |

On this day in 1957, Stephanie Mills was born. Mills became a star playing Dorothy in the musical The Wiz in the late 1970s, and went on to be a successful R&B singer in the 1980s; "Home," one of the songs from The Wiz, would become her signature song, and she would return to the musical by playing Auntie Em in the 2015 television production. And on this day since 1993, the United Nations has observed World Water Day, dedicated to the importance of fresh water and to the management of water resources. The theme for World Water Day 2016 is "Water and Jobs."
