Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

Will Swift: Dick and Pat On this day in 1912, Pat Nixon was born. As First Lady, Nixon added more than 600 pieces to the White House collection of artworks and antiquities, and she took steps to make that collection more accessible to the public. She had pamphlets printed so that visitors would know what they were seeing, and had them translated into several languages for international tourists; she had ramps installed for disabled visitors; and she gave instructions that blind visitors were to be allowed to touch the antiquities whenever possible. Will Swift's Pat and Dick is a dual biography of the Nixons and a study of their marriage; it's available as an e-book from OverDrive, or in print.
The Concorde: Airport '79 On this day in 1926, Mercedes McCambridge was born. McCambridge had been working as a radio actress for a decade when she got her first film role in the 1949 adaptation of All the King's Men, a role for which she won the Academy Award. Among her other classic films are Giant, Johnny Guitar, Suddenly Last Summer, and The Exorcist, in which she dubbed the voice of the demon that possesses Linda Blair. McCambridge appears with an eclectic assortment of co-stars (Robert Wagern, Cicely Tyson, Charo, Alain Delon, and Jimmie Walker among them) in the disaster movie The Concorde: Airport '79; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
In Another Country And on this day in 1953, Isabelle Huppert was born. Huppert is one of France's most respected actresses; among her films are The Piano Teacher, La Ceremonie, and 8 Women. She has worked only occasionally in English-language films, notably in I Heart Huckabees and Heaven's Gate. In the 2012 South Korean film In Another Country, she stars in three separate short stories, each telling the story of a French woman named Anne and her adventures on a vacationi in Korea; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
