Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

George Orwell: 1984 On this day in 1949, George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-four was first published. The dystopian novel is set in a world at perpetual war, in which the public is under constant surveillance by the government, and individualism is seen as dangerous. The novel introduced several phrases and ideas which have come to be part of the language -- Big Brother, thoughtcrime, memory hole, doublethink. Nineteen Eighty-four is available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, in print, or as an audiobook.
Emanuel Ax: Variations On this day in 1949, Emanuel Ax was born. The pianist has been a strong advocate for contemporary composers, premiering new music by John Adams, Bright Sheng, and others. In addition to his work as a solo pianist, Ax frequently performs in concert with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and they have recorded much of the standard repertoire for cello and piano. Several of Ax's recordings are available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Saving the Oceans And this day is the 25th annual World Oceans Day, an observance that gained official recognition from the United Nations in 2008. The theme for this year's World Oceans Day is "Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet," with a particular focus on the problem of plastic ocean pollution. The PBS documentary series Saving the Ocean looks at people and communities who are finding innovative ways to make the oceans healthier; ten 30-minute episodes are available for streaming at Hoopla.
