In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

Thomas Mann: Death in Venice On this day in 1875, Thomas Mann was born. Mann's novels and short stories explored the state of German society in the first half of the twentieth century; his protagonists are frequently artists and intellectuals. During World War II, Mann lived in the United States, where he recorded a series of anti-Nazi speeches, which were broadcast into Germany by BBC Radio. Mann's 1912 novella Death in Venice is the tale of an aging German author vacationing in Venice who becomes increasingly obsessed with one of the young guests at his hotel; it's available as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive, or in print.
Louis Andriessen On this day in 1939, Louis Andriessen was born. The Dutch composer rarely writes for traditional orchestra, preferring to write for smaller ensembles in which orchestral instruments might be joined by electric guitars or synthesizers. Andriessen's influences range from big band jazz to 1970s minimalism, and his music tends to be loud, cheerful, and dissonant. A variety of Andriessen's music is available for streaming at Hoopla.
One Day Pina Asked And on this day in 1950, Chantal Akerman was born. The French director was an important figure in feminist and avant-garde cinema. Her 1975 film Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles has been frequently cited by later female directors as influential on their work. Akerman resisted being labeled as a feminist director, saying "I don't think women's cinema exists." One Day Pina Asked... is Akerman's 1983 documentary about choreographer Pina Bausch; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
