Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

The Border On this day in 1928, Tony Richardson was born. In his thirty-year career, Richardson directed movies in a wide range of styles -- British "kitchen sink realism" (A Taste of Honey), historical epic (The Charge of the Light Brigade), semi-musical Australian Western (Ned Kelly), adaptation of Edward Albee psychological drama (A Delicate Balance). If there is a common thread in Richardson's work, it is his interest in working with the best possible actors and writers. His 1982 drama The Border stars Jack Richardson, Harvey Keitel, and Valerie Perrine; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
Margaret Drabble: The Peppered Moth On this day in 1939, Margaret Drabble was born. Drabble has written eighteen novels, a collection of short stories, and several books of literary criticism and biography. The central characters of her novels are usually women grappling with personal and financial struggles, and with the restrictions placed up on them by a conservative society. Drabble's 2001 novel The Peppered Moth is a family drama loosely inspired by the life of Drabble's mother; it's available as an e-book from OverDrive, or in print.
Laurie Anderson: Strange Angels And on this day in 1947, Laurie Anderson was born. Anderson is a performance artist and musician whose music and performance pieces became popular among 1970s New York avant-garde artists. She began to be recognized by a broader audience in 1981, when her song "O Superman" became a hit in England. She continues to record, and to perform new theatrical works. Many of Anderson's albums are available for streaming or download at Hoopla.
