In the mood for a good movie? Some toe-tapping music? A thrilling book? ON THIS DAY will lead you to new possibilities every day, tied to interesting moments from history and popular culture. Whether it’s streamable and downloadable music and film, e-books and e-audio, or physical books and DVDs, we hope you’ll find something to enjoy as you pick up a few bits of history each day.

Czeslaw Milosz: New and Collected Poems, 1931-2001 On this day in 1911, Czeslaw Milosz was born. The Polish poet had published two books of poetry in 1951, when he defected to France; his poetry would not be published again in his native country for forty years, until after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Milosz became a United States citizen in 1970, and taught for many years at the University of California, Berkeley. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1980. New and Collected Poems: 1931-2001 offers a sampling of Milosz's finest work; it's available in print.
Margaret Mitchell: Gone With the Wind On this day in 1936, Margaret Mitchell's novel Gone With the Wind was published. The book was an instant success, selling more than a million copies by the end of the year, despite the unusually high price -- three dollars. Mitchell's novel has been criticized for its romanticized view of slavery and the plantation South, but it has been a popular and influential books. Gone With the Wind has been adapted as a musical (several times, in English, French, and Japanese), a ballet, and of course, as the classic 1939 film. Gone With the Wind is available as an e-book from OverDrive, and in print; the movie is available on DVD.
The Muppets' Wizard of Oz And on this day in 1955, David Alan Grier was born. Grier's acting career started with a starring role on Broadway, playing Jackie Robinson in the short-lived musical The First. He would first become familiar to a wide audience as a cast member of the 1990s sketch comedy series In Living Color, and has worked steadily in film, television, and theater ever since. His performance as the Cowardly Lion in last year's televised live production of The Wiz was not his first experience with Wizard of Oz adaptations; Grier played Dorothy's Uncle Henry in the 2005 The Muppets' Wizard of Oz, which is available for streaming at Hoopla.
