On this day in 1922, Alain Resnais was born. The French director began making short films in the late 1940s; he gained international acclaim in 1950s and 1960s with his earliest full-length features, including Night and Fog and Last Year at Marienbad. Resnais often worked with writers who had no previous cinematic experience, and in his later films, became interested in the relationship between film and other forms of cultural expression. A common theme of Resnais' films is the exploration of memory and the imagination, often leading him to unusual or fractured narrative techniques. Resnais' final film, Life of Riley, is an adapation of an Alan Ayckbourn play about a group of friends coping with the news that one of them has a terminal illness; it's available for streaming at Hoopla. |

And on this day, we celebrate National Doughnut Day. The observance has its roots in World War I, when Salvation Army volunteers served doughnuts to American soldiers in France at social centers near the front lines. In 1938, the Chicago Salvation Army began an annual doughnut day, selling doughnuts to help those suffering in the Great Depression, and to pay tribute to their wartime "doughnut dollies." Doughnut Day spread beyond the Salvation Army, and has become a general celebration of the tasty fried treats. Kamal Grant's Homemade Doughnuts will give you all the know-how you need to make your own doughnuts, toppings, glazes, and fillings; it's available as an e-book from OverDrive, or in print. |
