Welcome to ON THIS DAY! Each day, we'll look at a few moments from history and popular culture. We'll show you where you can rediscover classic movies and music, or read more about great moments in history. We'll point you to e-books, downloadable and streamable music and film, and e-audio; and of course, we haven't forgotten about physical books or DVDs.

Irma la Douce On this day in 1906, Billy Wilder was born. Wilder was one of the successful and critically acclaimed directors of the 1940s and 1950s. His list of classic films includes dark dramas such as Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard, and sparkling comedies such as Some Like It Hot and The Seven Year Itch. Wilder worked frequently with Jack Lemmon; they made seven movies together. Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine star in Irma La Douce, a romantic comedy about a French policeman who falls in love with a prostitute; it's available for streaming at Hoopla.
Britten: Song Cycles On this day in 1910, Peter Pears was born. Pears was a tenor, most closely associated with the music of Benjamin Britten, his musical and personal partner for nearly 40 years. Many of Britten's operas and song cycles were written for Pears, and the two frequently performed in recital together. Pears' voice was controversial; some critics found it too reedy to be pleasant, but even they were impressive by his interpretive skill and subtlety. Pears sings three of Britten's song cycles on a recording available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Jennifer Finney Boylan: She's Not There And on this day in 1958, Jennifer Finney Boylan was born. Boylan is a novelist, essayist, and political activist whose first three novels were published under the name James Finney Boylan. In 2000, Boylan began her transition from male to female; her next book, She's Not There, was a memoir of her life leading up to that transition. She is now a prominent advocate for the transgender community, and continues to write novels, memoirs, and books on transgender issues. She's Not There is available as an e-book from OverDrive, and in print.
