On this day in 1819, Jacques Offenbach was born. Most of his music was in the form of operettas; he wrote almost 100 of them during his life, several of which are still frequently performed today. Offenbach wrote only two full-length operas, but one of them, The Tales of Hoffman, is firmly established in the operatic standard repertoire. On this day in 1949, Lionel Richie was born. Richie first came to prominence as a member of The Commodores in the late 1970s, singing lead vocals on such songs as "Easy" and "Three Times a Lady." He was even more successful as a solo act, with more than a dozen top ten hits between 1981 and 1986. He continues to record and tour, releasing a new album every two or three years. And on this day in 1952, Vikram Seth was born. The Indian author has published three novels and several volumes of poetry. His 1993 novel A Suitable Boy is among the longest novels ever written in English; the paperback edition is almost 1,500 pages long. It's set in India in the early 1950s, where four families are caught up in one mother's attempt to arrange a marriage for her daughter.
