Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We'll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material -- e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film -- but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

Elgar: Cello Concerto/Enigma Variations On this day in 1857, Edward Elgar was born. The English composer was among the first to see the appeal of sound recordings; he began making recordings of his music as early as 1914, and became even more enthusiastic about the project when the development of the microphone in 1925 made more accurate recording possible. Enjoy his Cello Concerto, available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Carol Shields: The Stone Diaries On this day in 1935, Carol Shields was born. Her novels have been awarded virtually every major literary prize that the US and Canada have to offer (she is US born, and became a Canadian citizen after moving there with her husband). The Stone Diaries is the only novel ever to win both the Pulitzer Prize in the United States and the Governor General's Award in Canada. It's available as an e-book from OverDrive and in print.
Examined Life And on this day in 1953, Cornel West was born. He is a philosopher, activist, and cultural critic who appears frequently on TV and radio as a commentator on the news of the day. His work frequently focuses on race, gender, and class, and the ways in which they interact. He is one of eight philosophers featured in the documentary Examined Life, talking about his philosophy and its implications in daily life. The movie is available for streaming at Hoopla.
