On this day in 1919, Pauline Kael was born. Kael was a movie critic whose earliest reviews appeared on a Berkeley radio station in the late 1950s. Her frequently combative style gained her a loyal following, and in 1968, she joined The New Yorker, where she would review movies until her retirement in 1991. Kael was not interested in critical consensus, and sometimes seemed to take pleasure in panning a much-praised film, or in defending one that most critics disliked. She was among the rare critics whose reviews were popular enough to be collected in book form. Brian Kellow's Pauline Kael is a biography, looking at her rise to the top of her profession and her continuing influence on film criticism; it's available as an e-book from OverDrive, or in print. |
