Great moments in history and popular culture happen every day, and ON THIS DAY will share a few of them with you. We’ll also point you to related resources in our collection, helping you to discover classic films, musical favorites, and historical tidbits. The primary focus will be on our e-material – e-books, e-audio, and downloadable and streamable music and film – but physical books and DVDs will also be part of the fun.

Stravinsky Conducts Stravinsky On this day in 1882, Igor Stravinsky was born. Stravinsky was one of the most influential composers of the 20th century, and his long career is marked by an unusual stylistic diversity. Stravinsky studied composition with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, who (along with other Russian composers) was a strong influence on his early music. In his middle period, Stravinsky's music became more influenced by the Classical period and by themes from Greek mythology; in his final years, he began to explore serial and twelve-tone techniques. A variety of Stravinsky's music is available for streaming or download at Freegal.
Caryn Jones & Robin Lenzi: Chocolate Chip Cookies On this day in 1903, Ruth Graves Wakefield was born. Wakefield and her husband ran the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts. Wakefield did all of the cooking for their guests, and it was there that she invented the Toll House Cookie, the first chocolate chip cookie. When the recipe was published in 1938, it was so successful that sales of Nestle chocolate bars soared, leading Nestle to market chocolate chips specifically to make the cookie easier to bake. Wakefield eventually sold Nestle the rights to use her recipe and the Toll House name for one dollar and a lifetime supply of chocolate. Caryn Jones and Robin Lenzi offer a variety of variations in Chocolate Chip Cookies, available as an e-book from OverDrive and in print.
His Girl Friday And on this day in 1904, Ralph Bellamy was born. Bellamy had a sixty-year career in film and television, appearing in movies as far-ranging as Rosemary's Baby, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, and Pretty Woman. He is perhaps best remembered for the romantic comedies in which he played somewhat bumbling suitors who wind up losing the girl to the more suave leading man (more often than not, Cary Grant); he played those characters so well that such roles are still described as "the Ralph Bellamy part." In 1940's His Girl Friday, it's Rosalind Russell being courted by Grant and Bellamy; the movie is available for streaming at Hoopla.
