On this day in 1911, Wilbert Awdry was born. Awdry was an Anglican priest who created the "Railway Series," children's books featuring the popular character Thomas the Tank Engine. The stories began as a way for Awdry to entertain his son, Christopher, who was sick with the measles. The first book was published in 1945, and Awdry would write 26 books; Christopher would add an additional 16 books to the series. On this day in 1921, Erroll Garner was born. The pianist never learned to read music, but had a remarkable ear and memory; as a child, he was reportedly able to play back complex pieces of music after a single hearing. Garner was noted for being able to play distinctly different parts and rhythms with each hand. His best known composition is "Misty," written as an instrumental and later given lyrics by Johnny Burke. Several of Garner's albums are available for streaming at Hoopla. |

And on this day in 1941, Harry Nilsson was born. Nilsson was a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter who reached his commercial peak around 1970, with hit songs such as "Everybody's Talkin," "Coconut," and "Without You."
