On this day in 1827, Johanna Spyri was born. She was the author of Heidi, a story which has had such enduring popularity that there is a Heidiland tourist area in Switzerland. The story has been adapted for film or TV more than a dozen times, including a 1968 TV-movie that famously interrupted the exciting conclusion of a football game. On this day in 1928, Richard M. Sherman was born. Richard and his brother Robert dominated movie songwriting in the 1960s and early 1970s, writing the songs for Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Charlotte's Web, Winnie the Pooh, and other films. They also wrote the Disneyland earworm "It's a Small World." Many of their greatest songs are collected in The Sherman Brothers Songbook, available for streaming at Hoopla. |

And on this day in 1939, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum was dedicated in Cooperstown, New York. The museum features a central gallery honoring the 300 players, executives, managers, and umpires who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame; an art gallery featuring baseball-related work; a collection of memorabilia from baseball movies; a special area with exhibits and activities for children; and other permanent and rotating exhibits. The book Inside the Baseball Hall of Fame features more than 200 photographs of artifacts from the museum's collection. |
