On this day in 1901, Frederick Loewe was born. He was a musical prodigy, appearing as a piano soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic at the age of 13. His greatest success came in collaboration with lyricist Alan Jay Lerner, with whom he wrote a series of successful musicals for Broadway and the movies. The original cast recordings of the Lerner & Loewe musicals My Fair Lady and Camelot are available for streaming or download at Freegal. |

On this day in 1922, Judy Garland was born. She found success as a child star in a series of musicals co-starring Mickey Rooney, and was among the rare child actors to have equal success in adulthood. While she occasionally performed in non-singing roles, she is best remembered for her musicals, and her performances are collected in the 6-volume series Judy Garland at the Movies, available for streaming at Hoopla. |

And on this day in 1935, Robert Smith and Bill Wilson founded Alcoholics Anonymous. The group claims a global membership of more than 2 million, and its "twelve steps" program has been adopted by similar groups to help people with other types of addiction. The twelve steps are spelled out in Alcoholics Anonymous, informally known as "The Big Book." It's available as an e-audio from OverDrive and in print. |
