On this day in 1804, Mikhail Glinka was born. He was one of the first Russian composers to receive international attention, with his operas A Life for the Tsar and Ruslan and Ludmila being particularly noteworthy. Edo de Waart (coincidentally also born on this day, in 1941) conducts the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in the overture from Ruslan and a variety of music by other composers on Symphony Under Sails, available for streaming or download at Freegal. |

On this day in 1926, Marilyn Monroe was born. She was perhaps the great American sex symbol of the 1950s, and fought hard to be cast in roles other than the "dumb blonde" parts that had made her a star. Many of her best films were musicals, and Hoopla offers for streaming Songs & Music from the Diamond Collection. |

And on this day in 1937, Colleen McCullough was born. She wrote more than 20 novels, including a painstakingly researched series set in ancient Rome. But it was The Thorn Birds that made her an international household name. The book sold millions of copies, and was the basis for one of the most popular television miniseries ever. Enjoy the story as an e-book or e-audio from OverDrive or in print; or watch the miniseries on DVD. |
