On this day in 1901, Barbara Cartland was born. She wrote more than 700 romance novels, specializing in Victorian-era romance. She published 23 books in 1983 -- still the Guinness record for most novels published in a single year. And on this day in 1935, Mercedes Sosa was born. The Argentine singer was a leader of the nueva cancion movement in the 1960s and 1970s, music which drew on traditional Latin American styles and was explicitly committed to leftist politics and social justice.
