On this day in 1882, Percy Grainger was born. In the early 20th century, Grainger traveled throughout England, recording and transcribing traditional folksongs; much of his work as a composer was made up of arrangements of those songs. He generally ignored the traditional large-scale musical forms -- symphony, sonata, opera -- and most of his pieces are small, rarely more than a few minutes long. A collection of Grainger's piano music is available for streaming at Hoopla. |
